English practice #9

today as I promised I watched a movie which a friend recommended to me. it`s called "Forrest Gump".

the main character Forrest Gump was not very smart, but a kind and open guy. he sat on a bus stop and told to casual acquaintances his life story. I really liked this film. it was long and boring in the beginning but it feels like you fully dive in this film.

I learned some words and phrases from this film. for example:

dandy — a man, especially in the past, who dressed in expensive, fashionable clothes and was very interested in his own appearance

to dangle — to hang loosely, or to hold something so that it hangs loosely

dizzy — confusing and very fast

to grease — to make something happen more easily

platoon — a small group of about ten or twelve soldiers, with a lieutenant in charge of it

to ambush — to suddenly attack someone after hiding and waiting for them

chink — a small narrow crack or opening

to cripple — to cause severe damage to something so that it cannot operate effectively

candid — honest and telling the truth, especially about something difficult or painful

jabber — to speak or say something quickly in a way that is difficult to understand

stupid is as stupid does — actions define stupidity. this phrase a main character always told to people who called him stupid.

and not phrase but i think that it`s interesting too:

beatnik — a term that was based on ideas about the typical social stratum of youth in the middle of the 20th century, which was characterized by antisocial behavior and rejection of the traditional cultural values of the nation.
